10 Friendmas Party Ideas and Hacks

I’ve always said that friends are the family you choose, and there’s no better time to celebrate that than during the holidays.

That’s where Friendmas comes in. It’s that special gathering, free from the obligations and formal traditions of family events, where you can just relax and be yourselves.

It’s about creating your own traditions, sharing laughs, and making memories that will get you through the cold winter months.

Over the years, I’ve hosted and attended my fair share of these get-togethers. I’ve learned that a great Friendmas party isn’t about spending a ton of money or stressing over every little detail.

It’s about creating a warm, fun atmosphere where everyone feels included. I thought it would be fitting to share some of my favorite ideas and hacks to help you throw a memorable and low-stress Friendmas celebration.

1. Themed Gift Exchange

A standard Secret Santa is fine, but adding a theme can elevate the whole experience. It sparks creativity and often leads to some truly hilarious moments. I once went to a “Something You Love” themed exchange where someone brought their favorite brand of hot sauce. It was a huge hit.

Consider themes like:

  • A Favorite Things Party: Set a price limit (say, $15) and have everyone bring three of the same item. Each person takes a turn explaining why they love their item, and then you draw names to see who gets to take each set home.
  • Thrift Store Gems: Challenge your friends to find the weirdest, funniest, or most unique item at a thrift store within a set budget.
  • Themed White Elephant: Instead of random gifts, set a category like “As Seen on TV,” “cozy night in,” or “bad board games.” It gives a little direction while keeping the chaotic fun of a gift-stealing game.
  • Booklovers: Does your group of friends love books. Then do a book gift exchange. This can be super fun if your friends like a specific genre. Like a cookbook exchange. You can do this with movies too.

2. Effortless Potluck Planning

The idea of cooking a full holiday meal for a dozen friends can be overwhelming. Trust me I have done it!

A potluck is the obvious solution, but it can quickly go wrong. I still have nightmares about a party that ended up with five bags of chips and one lonely dessert.

Here’s the hack: use a simple online sign-up sheet like SignUpGenius or even just a shared Google Doc. Create categories—appetizer, main dish, side dish, dessert, drinks—and let people claim a spot.

This ensures you get a balanced meal without having to chase everyone down with texts. It makes everyone feel like they’re contributing without putting all the pressure on one person.

You can make this fun with a theme: Italian Christmas or Mexican Christmas

3. A DIY Photo Booth with a Twist

A photo booth is a must. It gives people a fun activity and creates lasting mementos. You don’t need to rent expensive equipment. Just hang a festive backdrop—a string of lights against a wall, some wrapping paper, or a tinsel curtain will do.

To make it more interesting, create your own props that are personal to your friend group. Think inside jokes, printed-out memes you all love, or props related to your favorite shows. It’s much more fun than a generic mustache on a stick. Have a ring light and a phone stand ready, and let people go wild.

4. The “Ugliest” Holiday Attire Contest

Encourage everyone to show up in their most gloriously tacky holiday gear. This could be a classic ugly Christmas sweater, but why stop there? Open it up to ugly holiday vests, festive onesies, or even DIY outfits.

The point is to remove any pressure to dress up and lean into the silliness. Have a ridiculous, small prize for the winner, like a “tackiest trophy” or just bragging rights for the next year.

5. Big-Batch Cocktail (or Mocktail)

Playing bartender all night is a quick way to miss out on your own party. My go-to solution is a big-batch drink. Find a festive recipe for a holiday punch, mulled wine, or a festive sangria that can be made ahead of time. You can put it in a large drink dispenser or a punch bowl and let guests serve themselves.

Don’t forget a non-alcoholic option! A festive mocktail, like a cranberry-ginger spritzer, ensures everyone has something special to sip on. It’s a simple touch that makes everyone feel included.

6. A Playlist That Understands the Vibe

Music sets the entire mood of the party. While it’s easy to just put on a generic “Christmas Classics” playlist, a truly great party playlist takes a bit more thought. My strategy is to create a collaborative playlist on a platform like Spotify.

Send the link out to your friends a week before the party and let everyone add a few of their favorite holiday tunes and party anthems. This guarantees there’s something for everyone, and it’s always fun to hear what songs people choose. It becomes a reflection of your group’s collective taste.

7. A Low-Stress Decorating Hack

You don’t need to turn your home into Santa’s workshop to create a festive atmosphere. I’ve found that focusing on lighting is the most effective hack. Dim your main lights and use the warm glow of string lights, candles (or flameless ones for safety), and maybe a fireplace video on your TV. This instantly makes a space feel cozy and intimate. A mini tree and a few festive touches are all you need to complete the scene.

8. A “Rate Your Year” Station

This is a quiet, reflective activity that can lead to some really meaningful conversations. Set up a little station with slips of paper and pens. Ask people to anonymously write down their “Rose, Thorn, and Bud” for the year:

  • Rose: A highlight or something they’re proud of.
  • Thorn: A challenge they faced.
  • Bud: Something they’re looking forward to in the new year.

Collect the slips in a bowl, and later in the evening, you can read them aloud. It’s a beautiful way to connect on a deeper level and celebrate both the triumphs and the struggles of the past year together.

9. Holiday-Themed Minute to Win It Games

Sometimes, you need an activity to break the ice or inject some energy into the party. “Minute to Win It” games are perfect because they’re quick, hilarious, and require very little setup.

Some holiday-themed ideas include:

  • Jingle Bell Toss: Have teams try to toss as many jingle bells into a cup as they can in 60 seconds.
  • Ornament Relay: Using only a spoon, have players race to carry a delicate ornament from one side of the room to the other.
  • Human Christmas Tree: One person from each team is the “tree,” and their teammates have 60 seconds to decorate them with streamers, bows, and tinsel.

10. The “Midnight” Pancake Tradition

Who says the party has to end when the clock strikes twelve? One of my favorite Friendmas traditions is making pancakes right around midnight. There’s something wonderfully decadent and fun about having breakfast food in the middle of the night.

You can even set up a small toppings bar with syrup, chocolate chips, and fruit. It’s a perfect, cozy way to wind down the night and give everyone a little something to eat before they head home or crash on the couch.

A Celebration of Friendship

Ultimately, Friendmas is a reminder that the holiday season is about connection. It’s about showing up for your people and creating a space where everyone feels seen and celebrated. Don’t get caught up in the pressure of perfection. Pick a few of these ideas, leave room for spontaneity, and focus on what really matters: enjoying the time you have together.
